Francesco Grillo graduated with honours in Economics and Business from LUISS University in Rome, before obtaining an MBA from Boston University as a Fulbright Scholar. He also holds a PhD in Political Economy from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Professor at the Master in Transformative Sustainability

Francesco is a professor at Bocconi University, where he teaches at the Master in Transformative Sustainability (run jointly with the Politecnico di Milano), and a Visiting Fellow at the European University Institute. He is also an Affiliate Professor at the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa and a lecturer at the Summer School of the University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. He has been a Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute and at St Antony’s College (University of Oxford). He is an adviser on urban policies to the Minister of Infrastructure and has been an adviser to the Minister of Education, University and Research.

Grillo is the chief executive of Vision and Value, which evaluates the public policies of major institutions (including the European Commission) and advises multinational companies on how digital technologies are changing the nature of industries.

He is also a columnist for Il Messaggero, Corriere della Sera, Linkiesta and The Guardian, and a regular guest on La7, SkyTG24 and RaiNews24. Grillo is also the director of the think tank Vision, with which he runs two annual international conferences, one in Siena on the future of Europe and the other in the Dolomites on the global governance of climate change, which serve as problem-solving platforms bringing together policy makers, academics, journalists and entrepreneurs from different countries and backgrounds. He is the author of peer-reviewed articles and policy papers, the latest on the proposal to use electronic voting as a tool for establishing transnational constituencies for the election of the European Parliament. His latest books (2019): “Democracy and Growth in the 21st century: the diverging cases of China and Italy” (Springer Nature) and “Lezioni Cinesi” (Solferino).
